Alcohol and opioids do not remove pain or distress.
They mask the negative emotions that are creating or intensifying it.
When the emotions feel hidden, the discomfort reduces.
When the substance wears off, the emotions return, and the discomfort returns with them.

Why do people drink or rely on opioids?

- alcohol can feel calming
- opioids can appear to remove pain
- people feel temporarily better
But the emotional load has not gone. It is only masked.

The person seeks the substance again.

A real example that reveals the mechanism

That single thought created a new emotional load.
