Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety is an unpleasant state of inner turmoil. It is often felt as a sense of dread, uneasiness or worry. Anxiety is not the same as fear. Fear is a response to something happening now. Anxiety is the expectation of future fear. It can create muscular tension, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and a feeling of being unable to cope with situations that require confidence or clarity.

Anxiety can appear in two main forms. Some people experience long, drawn‑out daily symptoms that reduce their quality of life. This is often called chronic or generalised anxiety. Others experience short, intense bursts of panic that come without warning. Both patterns are driven by the same underlying cause.

Common symptoms include changes in sleep, changes in appetite, increased or decreased food intake, and tension that leads to continual movement such as foot tapping. Many people describe feelings of apprehension or dread, irritability, restlessness, anticipating the worst, watching for danger and moments where the mind goes blank. Others experience bad dreams, intrusive sensations, obsessive thoughts, a trapped‑in‑the‑mind feeling or a sense that everything around them is threatening.

The cognitive effects of anxiety can be overwhelming. Thoughts often focus on imagined dangers, such as fear of dying. Chest pains may be interpreted as a heart attack. Shooting pains in the head may be feared as a tumour or aneurysm. The mind becomes locked on the worst‑case scenario and cannot let go. These thoughts feel real, even though they are created by the person’s own negative thinking.

The list of problems associated with anxiety seems endless. Different thoughts affect different people, but the cause is always the same. Anxiety is generated by negative thoughts. If left unresolved, these thoughts can create physical symptoms and may intensify into more severe emotional distress.
